setting up a semi aquatic/aquatic aquarium
are you ready to learn how to setup an underwater world for your semi aquatic/aquatic reptile?
aquatic /semi aquatic reptiles include:
pixie frog
other aquatic frogs
newts
salamanders
alligator
aquatic turtles
lighting...........................................................................................
the aqautic turtles, alligators are diurnal which means they awake during the day and go to sleep at night just like us; they require a 12 hr uvb spectrum. uvb for reptiles is a light bulb found in petstores. aquatic reptiles require low amounts of uvb so they need whats called a 2.0 uvb bulb which just another word for low amounts of uvb. the rest are nocturnal and do not need the uvb bulb but they do need what we call vitamin d3 which can be found at petstores. you put some of it in a container or a bag and dump the amount of insects your feeding your reptile that day into the bag/container... SHAKE SHAKE SHAKE the bag and they will be covered in vitamin d3. do this twice weekly.
decorating...............................................................................................
remember its an aqautic enclosure and it cannot be a tall tank but instead a long tank. because these are aquatic reptiles you need to think aquatic... what i mean is put things that have to do with ponds or water into the terrarium. but fake duckweed or fake pond plants (you can find these in the petstore) even semi aquatic background paper or aqautic background paper. the possibilities are endless. it is very important to provide at least 1 hiding place in your terrarium; one thing thats always worked for a hideout for my reptiles is where you take several rocks that stand a little taller then your reptile and then find a flat surface rock; place the several rocks down first and then lay down the flat surface rock ontop of the other rocks. you will also need a turtle dock for the turtles, newts, frogs, (alligators just get a 4' by 4' by 2' pool in their terrarium the rest is land.) and the salmanders so i guess they are all semi aquatic. aquati reptile do not need and land source what so ever. the substrate you will need is aquarium gravel; aqaurium gravel is the only substrate that can actually be put in water you dont actually need substrate and i have 1 pro and 1 con for aqauriumm gravel... the pro is that it makes your tank look good and natural and personally i love natural enclosures. the con is that its very hard to clean and when all the water is out of the tank for cleaning the gravel just sticks to the tank. there is a solution though, you can buy whats called an aquarium vacum at the petstore. i ont actuallt know how much they are but if any of you wanna know just give me the name of your loal petstore/s and ill check.
